    About Vatsalyagram

  • What does Vatsalya Gram do?
Vatsalya Gram is a unique alternative to orphanages and women's shelters. It is the only facility in the world where orphaned children and destitute women of all ages are given homes so they may live like families and form everlasting bonds as parents and siblings. Vatsalya families live in an atmosphere of affection and are nurtured in a secure environment without any distinction of caste, creed or race. The project is managed by dedicated and trained professionals.
  • Can I adopt a child from Vatsalya Gram?
While we encourage donations for the education and other needs of the children, we do not put up children for adoption. Vatsalyagram is designed to be a wholesome home for them, with complete families. We want to mainstream children in the most normal manner.

  • What is Vatsalya Family? Who does it constitute of?
Each Vatsalya family consists of seven children, a mother, an aunt (Mausi) and a grandmother (Naani) living in the familiar atmosphere of their own home. The women are carefully trained for their role in dealing with up to seven children per home. This arrangement encourages bonding within the family and gives the children a sense of belonging, both essential factors in the child's early development. Although there is no blood relationship in this Vatsalya family, all members of the family are connected by an emotional bond of love and trust.
  • On what basis the mothers, aunts and grandmothers are selected for Vatsalya Family?
The mothers, aunts and grandmothers are usually destitute women who are looking for shelter themselves. A lot of times, women come to Vatsalyagram willingly, leaving their families behind to serve the higher end of being a mother or a family member to these orphaned children. These women are given the right kind of training for handling children in a large household. They are also given a grounding in the Indian culture so that they can take care of the morals and ethics of the children as well.
  • How the children enter Vatsalya Gram?
We accept children who have been abandoned at the doorstep of the Vatsalyagram facility. Children are also often referred to us by doctors, nursing homes, police and magistrates in courts.
  • How is Vatsalya Gram unique in serving women and children?
In a society, where an orphan child is considered an exclusion from the mainstream, Vatsalyagram tries to bring up disadvantaged children in a manner which allows them to become a part of the mainstream. More than anything else, Vatsalyagram is an endeavour to allow two unfortunate souls to come into proximity ofeach other. In this close proximity, they can reach out to each other and receive the support that each of them requires.

Vatsalyagram is a family and not an orphanage. With each new addition to the family, there is a celebration of a new miracle of life, just as it would have been if the child was born into a family. Vatsalyagram is one of the few institutions of its kind in the country, where children are treated both with love and respect. Each person residing in Vatsalyagram, is a valuable member of the family.

Vatsalyagram cherishes the concept of a family. There are separate household units replete with a mother, grandmother, maternal aunts and children. Each of these families functions as an independent unit and also as a co dependent societal structure. The children are given a firm grounding of the Indian culture and are exposed to all the rituals and ceremonies followed in a traditional Indian household. Right from the mundane ceremony to the birthday celebrations of the children, each family in Vatsalyagram follows the traditional rituals of the ideal Indian family.

Here, normalcy in the day to day activities is encouraged. Like a small resident township, children go to school, do their homework, play with their brothers and sisters and are loved by their mothers, aunts and grandmothers.
